Small
businesses wanting to cut costs could take heed from drug and
alcohol treatment charity Compass, which
has cut its IT budget by an
estimated £10,000. "The charity has a number of different sites and
the traditional
way of communicating would be installing a server at
each site, but that is expensive to buy and maintain," explains
James White, Service Delivery Manager at consultancy appiChar, which
has installed Compass' new system with a
central database and
servers at head office and Terminal Servers linked to all the
charity's other sites.

Riding into town
The US 'circuit rider' model of IT support recently mentioned in the
newsletter is being adopted by charity support specialist appiChar.
Working closely with Off The Streets and Into Work (OSW), a charity
that coordinates training and employment programmes for homeless
people, it will be seeking to improve the IT infrastructure of OSW's
partner agencies. An IT consultant will work with a number of
organisations to help develop IT strategies, policies and
procedures, mentor and coach existing staff, and to give advice on
